Whether you’re new to bass or you’ve been playing for years, at some point you start asking: how do I actually shape my tone beyond just choosing a bass and an amp?
That’s where pedals like the Origin Effects DCX Bass come in. It’s a tone shaper inspired by the legendary UA 610 studio preamp, designed to give you some of that polished, harmonically rich studio character right on your pedalboard.
But do you actually need one?
In this video, I put the DCX through its paces with a Fender Precision Bass and Music Man DarkRay, compare it with the UA 610 plugin, and then put it up against the Walrus Audio Mantle, Neve Shelford Channel and a Noble-inspired model on the Darkglass Anagram.
So if you’re chasing a more finished bass tone, let’s figure out what a tone shaper actually adds and whether you need one in your rig.
