📕 The Aussie Van Buyer's Bible — the checks I'd do before you sign 👉
Every time a van goes into a dealer's workshop somebody opens a job card. A van that's been back three times has three. One that never went back has none — and in a row they look identical.
What I cover:
Why the DEALER owes you the remedy under the ACL, not the factory
The ACCC's 2022 survey: 80% of 2,270 owners had problems, half of them major
Who really pays, and the 40% of suppliers a manufacturer wouldn't repay
There is NO public register of warranty repairs — and how to spot one anyway
Why a van that came back and was PROPERLY fixed is often the better buy
FACT-CHECK: Under the ACL the supplier who sold the van owes the consumer guarantees on all its components, independently of any manufacturer warranty; a major failure lets the buyer choose refund or replacement. Figures: ACCC, "New caravan retailing", 21 July 2022 — 2,270 owners surveyed, 80% reporting problems, half of those major; 67 suppliers, 40% refused reimbursement. No claim is made that this has since changed. The recalls cited were voluntarily reported and remedied; no wrongdoing is alleged against anyone named.
DISCLAIMER: General information and my honest opinion — NOT legal, consumer-law, engineering or purchasing advice, and not advice about your van or your dispute. Gas, 240V, plumbing and appliances are licensed trades only. Check the recall register and your state's consumer affairs guidance, and get any van inspected.
