"A Marvellous Work and a Wonder"
Isaiah 13–14; 22; 24–30; 35
These chapters from Isaiah span a sweeping narrative that transitions from warnings of worldly downfall to promises of divine redemption. Isaiah begins by detailing the collapse of ancient Babylon, using its arrogance and the fall of Lucifer as a warning against spiritual pride and relying on worldly power. Across these chapters, he describes a world suffering from widespread apostasy and broken covenants, where spiritual darkness leaves humanity disconnected from God's guidance.
At the heart of this prophetic sequence is chapter 29, which foretells the Lord's divine remedy for this spiritual darkness. Isaiah prophesies that God will intervene in the latter days by performing "a marvellous work and a wonder" to restore His gospel and confound worldly wisdom. A central part of this miracle is the coming forth of a "book that is sealed"—foretelling the Book of Mormon—read by the unlearned through divine power. This restored truth opens the eyes of the spiritually blind, corrects false doctrines, and allows the meek to find renewed joy in the Lord.
The collection culminates in chapters 25 and 35 with vibrant promises of ultimate healing, deliverance, and gathering. Isaiah assures us that the Savior will act as a refuge from life's storms, swallowing up death in victory and wiping away every tear. Through the Restoration, the spiritual wilderness transforms, allowing the redeemed to return to Zion with everlasting joy and find living water, peace, and permanent rest in God's covenant embrace.
