Welcome back to Greene Screen: October of Terror 2026! This time we're going back to 1988 for Tom Holland's Child's Play — the horror classic that introduced the world to Chucky and turned an innocent-looking Good Guy doll into one of the most recognizable horror icons of all time. Long before Chucky became the wisecracking, darkly comedic character many fans know today, the original Child's Play presented him as something much more sinister. In this Child's Play (1988) review and retrospective, I'm revisiting Brad Dourif's Chucky and Charles Lee Ray, Catherine Hicks' Karen Barclay, Alex Vincent's Andy Barclay, the Good Guy doll, the movie's practical effects and animatronics, and the suspense that helped make the original film work. I'll also look at why the movie initially keeps Chucky's true nature hidden, how the killer-doll concept became such an effective horror premise, and how Child's Play launched a franchise that eventually transformed Chucky from a terrifying villain into a full-blown pop-culture horror icon. Most importantly, I'll explain why Child's Play has stuck with me, what makes the original different from many of the sequels, and why Chucky earned a spot in Greene Screen's October of Terror. What do you think? Was Chucky scarier in the original Child's Play, or do you prefer the funnier, more outrageous Chucky from the sequels? Let me know in the comments. OCTOBER OF TERROR CONTINUES ALL MONTH LONG! Subscribe to Greene Screen and stay tuned as we revisit the horror, suspense and thriller movies that left their mark on the genre — and on me.
