When I first moved to Portugal I shared a flat with six Portuguese girls, and every night at that kitchen table I was terrified someone would ask me a question. Textbooks, vocabulary lists - and when it was my turn to speak, my mind went blank. Nearly a decade in Portugal and six years of teaching later, here are the 5 things I wish I'd understood back then: 1️⃣ YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW MORE BEFORE YOU SPEAK - "ready" never arrives. Ask whether you can communicate one simple idea with what you already have. 2️⃣ PRONUNCIATION CHANGES MORE THAN YOUR ACCENT - it decides whether people understand you AND whether you understand them. 3️⃣ LIVING IN PORTUGAL WON'T TEACH YOU PORTUGUESE BY ITSELF - people switch to English to "help". You need input you actually enjoy and regular output where you have to produce the language yourself. 4️⃣ LEARN PATTERNS, NOT FIXED PHRASES - don't memorise three separate sentences. Learn one structure like "Queria…" (I would like…) and swap the middle. 5️⃣ SPEAKING ONLY BECOMES NATURAL THROUGH REPETITION - you can know the grammar and still have three seconds to get the words out. That gap closes one way only. Plus what my students report back: locals complimenting their accent, and nobody switching to English on them. 🙋🏻‍♀️ Who am I?
