In 1872, in the mist-veiled hills of Kandy, an institution was founded that would shape the spirit of Sri Lanka. Trinity College has never been merely a school; it has stood as a proving ground for titans. From visionary statesmen like Lakshman Kadirgamar and national heroes like Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, to world cricket royalty in Kumar Sangakkara, the Red, Gold, and Blue has long set the benchmark for courage, character, and dignity.
And in 1906, that timeless spirit birthed Sri Lankan schools rugby.
Trinity didn’t just play the game—Trinity defined it. Through the gladiatorial battles of the Bradby Shield since 1945, the golden eras of C.Y. Ching, Rohan Sourjah, Ravi Balasuriya, Ashan Ratwatte, and the untouchable 1987 champions under Tyrrell Rajapakse, the Lions ruled the summit of schoolboy rugby. Even as decades turned, Trinity produced iconic match-winners—Murad Ramzeen leading the formidable 2011 Milo President's Trophy champions, followed by the game-breaking brilliance of Halique Wadood and Tharinda Ratwatte.
Yet, for 38 long, agonizing years, the holy grail—the Schools Rugby League title—remained an elusive phantom. The ghost of 1987 loomed over every generation that donned the jersey.
Until 2025.
When the season opened with a bitter defeat in the knockout tournament, many counted them out. Instead, that heartbreak became their greatest weapon. Under the tactical mastery of legendary head coach Fazil Marija, a fearless brotherhood was forged. And leading them from the trenches was their talismanic skipper—Usman Safraz.
Alongside an elite core featuring the tactical boot of Shan Althaf, the sharp vision of Udan Wijekoon, the breakdown mastery of Nisith Kumarasinghe, and the electric finishing of Minula Yaddehige, Safraz anchored the forward pack, weathered the two-point storm against Wesley in the Lion’s Den, and banished 38 years of waiting to bring the League crown back home to Kandy.
In this exclusive full episode of the Scrum Down Rugby Podcast, Usman Safraz steps into the den to take us behind the scenes of history:
The burden of tradition and carrying 119 years of Trinity rugby heritage
How the dressing room reset after early knockout heartbreak to chase perfection
The Fazil Marija factor: Tactics, brotherhood, and relentless conditioning
Inside the dying seconds against Wesley at Pallekele
The emotions of lifting the 2025 League Trophy and putting the ghosts of 1987 to rest
