BARILOCHE, ARGENTINA — PATAGONIA'S LAKES, MOUNTAINS, CHOCOLATE & SO MUCH MORE!
Welcome back to another Family & Friends Friday Postcard from Living Our Best Life!
This week, Tran and I spent seven nights and eight wonderful days in Bariloche, Argentina, in the heart of Argentine Patagonia. What a beautiful place! Situated along the shores of spectacular Nahuel Huapi Lake, Bariloche combines breathtaking mountain and lake scenery with charming architecture, wonderful restaurants, delicious chocolate, and a distinctly European atmosphere.
And we couldn't have asked for better weather! We enjoyed eight days of sunshine, with temperatures mostly in the mid-60s to 70s. It was absolutely perfect for exploring!
🏨 OUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME — RADISSON BLU BARILOCHE
We stayed at the beautiful, upscale Radisson Blu Bariloche, right on the lake. The hotel was a wonderful place to call home for a week, but what really made our stay special was the staff.
Every employee we encountered was friendly, professional, eager to help, and spoke excellent English. We would especially like to recognize Veronica at the front desk, along with Gonzalo, Maia, Alex, and Rocio, whom we enjoyed getting to know over our delicious breakfasts each morning. Thank you all for making our stay so memorable!
🏘️ EXPLORING THE CHARMING TOWN OF BARILOCHE
Bariloche has a population of approximately 130,000 and is one of Argentina's most popular destinations in Patagonia.
We loved walking around town and admiring its beautiful architecture. Bariloche has a fascinating European influence, shaped in part by immigration from Germany, Switzerland, and other Central European countries. Its alpine-style buildings, mountain setting, and lakeside location give it a character unlike almost anywhere else we've visited in South America.
And then there's the chocolate! Bariloche is often called Argentina's chocolate capital, and we certainly did our part to support the local chocolate shops. We also enjoyed some of the area's famous ice cream, including a visit to Rapa Nui, a local chocolate and ice cream favorite. Delicious!
🚗 EXPLORING PATAGONIA BY RENTAL CAR
Having a rental car for all eight days turned out to be a fantastic decision. It gave us the freedom to explore the surrounding region at our own pace, discover beautiful places, and enjoy some spectacular scenic drives.
Some of our highlights included:
• Circuito Chico — a beautiful scenic drive through the lakes, forests, and mountains surrounding Bariloche.
• Villa La Angostura — a wonderful day trip through some of Patagonia's most beautiful scenery.
• Cerro Campanario — we took the chairlift to the summit, where we were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Nahuel Huapi Lake, surrounding lakes, forests, and snow-capped Andean mountains.
🥾 HIKING IN BARILOCHE
We also enjoyed getting out on the trails and exploring Patagonia on foot.
Two of our favorite hikes were the Cerro Llao Llao Trail and the Arrayanes Trail. Both offered wonderful opportunities to experience the region's beautiful forests, lakes, and natural scenery.
🍺 A TASTE OF BARILOCHE
No visit to Bariloche would be complete without sampling some of its local breweries! We visited several, including Patagonia Cervecería and Manush Brewery, and enjoyed experiencing another side of the local food and drink scene.
Between the chocolate, ice cream, breweries, restaurants, and beautiful lakeside setting, we certainly weren't going hungry!
❤️ EIGHT DAYS WE WON'T SOON FORGET
Bariloche was everything we hoped it would be and more. We loved the charming town, the spectacular scenery, the freedom of exploring by car, and the many opportunities to get outside and enjoy Patagonia.
After eight wonderful days, it was difficult to leave. Bariloche is definitely a destination we would recommend to anyone exploring Argentina!
