A motorhome is two vehicles bolted together. The house is what you get sold. The driveline is what decides whether you're on holiday or on the phone to a tow truck outside Norseman.
Four I wouldn't spend my own money on, three that'll genuinely go half a million kilometres, and four free checks that tell you which one you're standing in front of.
What I cover:
The 2.3 Multijet Ducato belt — a TIME item on a van that does 3,000km a year
Early OM651 (2009–2012): the chain rattle, the injectors, what Mercedes changed
Comfort-Matic and Agile — an automated manual is not an automatic
Euro 6 DPF and AdBlue: why short trips and storage beat kilometres
Toyota Coaster 1HZ — no turbo, no filter, and the honest downsides
Isuzu N-series 4JJ1 / 4HK1, and why parts on a regional shelf beat specs
Mercedes OM642 V6 — the good one, and the two bills to look for
FACT-CHECK: Early OM651 timing-chain wear and Delphi piezo-injector issues are widely documented on 2009–2012 builds; Mercedes moved to Bosch solenoid injectors around late 2012/2013. Fiat's 2.3 runs a belt on a time-led interval (commonly quoted at 4–5 years) that arrives long before any distance figure. Comfort-Matic/Agile failures cluster on the clutch and actuator and need the gearbox off the engine. DPF ash accumulates and cannot be burned off. The 1HZ's 500,000km-plus service life and Isuzu N-series durability are long established. Prices indicative. Nobody is alleged to have acted improperly.
DISCLAIMER: General information and my honest opinion — NOT mechanical, legal, compliance or insurance advice. Service intervals and rules differ by state, model year and over time. Read the compliance plate on the actual vehicle, weigh it loaded the way you travel, and have any motorhome inspected before you buy. Gas and 240V work must be done by a licensed tradesperson.
