SEMINAR ABSTRACT Working memory lies at the intersection of sensation and decision making, with 'action' the observed outcome of these dependent stages of cognition. In this talk, Paul will show how the Vision Lab has been teasing apart the limitations of the sensory, working memory, and decision making systems using continuous colour, multi-feature, and multimodal working memory tasks. We end by discussing how our latest advances in population coding models and the circular diffusion model are providing a unified framework for understanding these dependent stages of cognition, and potential future links to neural correlates of cognition. Outside of the vision lab, Paul's research has covered a broad range of topics, from COVID-19 tracing technologies, emotions, and how humans understand numbers and quantities; to neural models of memory, decision making, and creating mathematical tools and measures for experimental research, so there's sure to be something for everyone! ABOUT THE SPEAKER Paul Garrett is a Cognitive Scientist working as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Paul studies a range of topics including numerical cognition, human memory, workload capacity, and computational modeling. He employs a range of techniques, including systems factorial technology, and experience sampling. ABOUT THE SEMINAR SERIES Our Research Seminar Series offers a great opportunity to learn from experts in the Hub, University, and research community. With a broad range of topics related to our Hub’s interests, there is something for everyone. Whether you want to learn to inform your own research or to simply satisfy a personal curiosity, we hope you enjoy the video and learn something interesting.
