What did ancient humans actually do all day?
We often imagine prehistoric life as an endless cycle of hunting, gathering, and surviving from sunrise to sunset.
But when researchers measure how modern foraging societies spend their time, that picture becomes much more complicated.
Food gathering and daily work could be demanding. Yet demanding work did not necessarily mean working all day. People also spent time resting, talking, sharing food, making tools, maintaining fires, and interacting with others.
So what happened during all those other hours?
This video follows the evidence behind one simple question: how did humans spend their days before clocks, screens, jobs, and modern entertainment?
We look at research involving the Hadza and other foraging societies, measurements of physical activity and sleep, evidence for controlled fire, studies of evening conversations and storytelling, and research on how changes in work organization can affect leisure.
Some evidence comes from people living today, so these observations are used as models rather than direct recordings of prehistoric life. Other interpretations remain hypotheses rather than established facts.
The goal is not to romanticize prehistoric life.
It is to understand how a human day can change when work, survival, rest, and social life are organized differently.
And one number becomes surprisingly important:
11 hours.
