A Poké Ball has no lock — no latch, no keyhole, no code. And the reason your Pokémon actually stays inside one is not what you think.
The ball is the only lock in fiction that advertises how often it breaks — every catch rate is a published number saying the containment is allowed to lose. Your Pokémon already walks around outside it: it follows you in HeartGold, rides your shoulder in Let's Go, eats curry at camp in Sword and Shield. The one thing a Poké Ball refuses to do isn't physical — throw it at another trainer's Pokémon and the game calls you a thief. The ball was never a cage. It registers a relationship.
Then it gets darker: the first-draft wooden ball in Legends Arceus that makes wild Pokémon attack you, the Snag Machine that forges the contract and creates Shadow Pokémon, and Bill — the one man who went inside the system and came out fused with a Clefairy. What keeps a Pokémon in a Poké Ball is that it agreed to a door nobody ever described to it.
All from the games' own text, ending on the Voltorb mystery.
