In this week's Jummah khutbah, we explore why there is absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about in openly living as a Muslim — your name, your beard, your hijab, your prayer — and why true honour and identity come from Allah ﷻ, not from how others see us. The khutbah opens with the aftermath of the Battle of Uhud, when the Muslims were reeling from loss, and Allah revealed the powerful reminder: "wa la tahinu wa la tahzanu... wa antumu al-a'launa in kuntum mu'minin" — do not weaken, do not grieve, you will be superior if you are true believers. From there, the khutbah draws on some of the most moving stories in Islamic history to show what that strength of identity actually looks like in practice. We hear the story of Bilal ibn Rabah (RA), tortured under the scorching sun of Makkah yet refusing to utter anything but "Ahad, Ahad" — the Oneness of Allah. We hear of Abdullah ibn Hudhafa (RA), captured and pressured under extreme conditions during the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), who held firm to his faith no matter the cost. And we're taken through the full account of the People of the Ditch (Ashab al-Ukhdud) from Surah al-Buruj — the story of a boy, a king, and a community who chose the fire over abandoning their faith, including the remarkable moment a newborn baby speaks to reassure his mother to stay firm. The khutbah then turns practical: how do we respond when our identity is mocked, pressured, or met with hostility? Drawing on Qur'an 41:34 and Surah an-Nahl, we're reminded that the real battle is the battle of the hearts — met not with retaliation, but with good character, wisdom, and excellent da'wah. And finally, the khutbah closes with guidance for parents: how to instil a confident, happy Muslim identity in our children from birth, through their early years, and crucially, through the choices we make about their Islamic education. 🕌 Join us for Jummah prayer in Rainham — help us build a permanent home for the Muslim community here. 📍 rainhammercy.com
