You can leave a room where everyone was glad to see you and still feel like you've worked a shift. This week's Energy CEO Letter, read aloud.
On the quiet fatigue of being liked for a version of yourself you have to keep producing.
Nobody has to be unkind for an evening to cost you something. Some of the most tiring relationships are the warm ones, where people like you, sometimes love you, for a version of yourself you keep available because it's the one they already know how to receive. And the difficult part is that the version may be completely real.
THIS WEEK: how reading a room becomes something you can't stop doing, what happened in a study where people were asked to hide what they were feeling, what a review of 137 studies found about the cost of concealing, what a 2025 study of 972 adults found about managing how we're seen, and why a compliment can be generous, accurate, and entirely sincere and still feel empty.
THE PRACTICE
Today, notice where you're spending energy maintaining an outdated version of yourself. Just notice what takes energy, and where you feel relaxed enough to be more fully yourself.
