Jujutsu has shown that local version control can feel different when changes, rewrites, and undo are represented directly. Today the practical path for jj collaboration is Git-backed storage and Git remotes — a major strength, but it raises a useful systems question: what would a native remote protocol for Jujutsu need to preserve? This talk focuses on one thin slice: synchronizing the jj operation graph across a remote boundary, treating operation heads, repository views, and change identity as server-side concepts rather than projecting everything through Git refs. It also covers one practical consequence — workspace projection for large repositories and partial workspaces — grounded in implementation work on a maintained Jujutsu fork and a prototype native remote. Speaker: Pandelis Zembashis (VEX) Pandelis Zembashis is a software engineer working on developer infrastructure, source control, and AI coding systems. He first attended Git Merge in 2017 as a student, where talks on GVFS, monorepo scale, and history editing shaped his interest in version control. He is currently building VEX, a jj-native remote prototype for Jujutsu, and maintains a Jujutsu fork for the native remote work. Previously, as CTO at Cosine, he worked on infrastructure for large-scale agentic code generation. Recorded at JJ Con 2026 in Lisbon.
