The hardest part of making a wooden hinge is drilling the small wooden knuckles that hold the hinge pin and allow both hinge leaves to rotate. That’s why I combined three different techniques: making a shallow centering hole freehand, building a DIY support to hold the small pieces, and using a drilling jig with a simple modification that makes it more stable. My carpenter’s trick is to make a shallow centering hole that helps position the drill bit precisely.
It’s also necessary to use a round nose router bit to rout the shapes into the wood hinge leaves where the wooden knuckles will be glued. The parts are made, glued properly, and with the help of a countersink bit with a depth stop, the screw holes are drilled. After some adjustments, I have a beautiful and curious wooden hinge.
