Entitled Killer Thinks He Can Murder A Stranger And Take His House

On September 26, 2018, King County detectives approached 39-year-old Jeremy Shaw on a street near his Tacoma home. They had questions about a dead man found in a shed a week earlier. It belonged to Steven Morphis, the 67-year-old retired Boeing worker whose body had been found bludgeoned to death on his own property. Jeremy had a story ready. He claimed Steven had cold-called him about pressure washing. He claimed the debit card transactions thousands of dollars to his company, "Aryan Enterprises" were pre-authorized payments for work. He claimed the Star Trek comics Steven supposedly gave him as a gift. He claimed the jacket was just something he found. Detectives had spent eight days working the case around the clock. They had cell tower data placing Jeremy's phone at the property on the night of the murder. They had Steven's shredded debit card and driver's license at Jeremy's home. They had surveillance footage of Jeremy torching Steven's stolen car in a University Place parking lot. They had a freshly dug grave-shaped hole in the backyard with Jeremy's fingerprints on the digging tools. And they had his wife, Lorena, in another room talking. On May 13, 2022, King County Superior Court Judge Matthew Williams sentenced him to 548 months more than 45 years in prison. The judge said: "It's difficult to imagine a more predatory and cold-blooded murder." His wife Lorena Shaw pleaded guilty to residential burglary, conspiracy to commit theft, and rendering criminal assistance.
