Murphy has bitten three members of his own family. One bite left Molly needing stitches.
The Loom family loves their three-year-old Irish Setter mix, but fear has taken over their home. Sudden movement, visitors, and human touch can trigger Murphy’s reactions. They have stopped hosting parties and often isolate him when guests arrive. Another serious bite could force them to make an impossible decision.
When I meet Murphy, I discover that fear is driving his behavior. He is sensitive, alert, and unsure who will take control in stressful situations. Without calm, confident guidance, that uncertainty can escalate into anxiety, reactivity, and biting.
I show the family how to help Murphy stay calm when someone knocks. Mike is loving and laid-back, but Murphy needs clearer direction from him. I describe it as trading “teddy bear” energy for “gorilla” energy: calm, confident, and powerful, without anger or aggression.
At the Dog Psychology Center, we work on one of Murphy’s greatest fears: being touched by unfamiliar people. Through exercise, desensitization, repetition, and a muzzle as a temporary safety tool, we begin teaching him that human contact does not have to be threatening.
But rehabilitation cannot end at the ranch. Everyone in the family must provide consistent structure, boundaries, and calm leadership. Their biggest test will come when visitors and children return. Can Murphy learn to trust his family before someone else gets hurt?
🐶 In this episode of Better Human Better Dog, you’ll learn:
🐕 How fear can escalate into biting
🧠 How to recognize insecurity in a reactive dog
🚪 How to manage doorbells, visitors, and sudden movement
💪 Why fearful dogs need calm, confident leadership
🦍 What “gorilla energy” means
🤝 Why the entire family must follow the same plan
❤️ How structure and trust support rehabilitation
