Washington's new 9.9% income tax could cost thousands of jobs, reduce business growth and push companies out of the state, according to warnings from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).
A report from the Washington Policy Center and Buckeye Institute projects that keeping the income tax could result in thousands fewer jobs, 1,400 fewer new businesses annually and an $8.3 billion annual reduction in economic output by 2036.
In an exclusive interview with The Center Square, NFIB Washington Director Patrick Connor explains how the millionaires tax could affect small businesses, employee wages, investment and Washington's economy.
Vancouver business owner Lois Cook of America's Phone Guys says her company is actively considering relocating to another state because of Washington's tax burden.
Meanwhile, supporters of the income tax warn that repealing it could jeopardize future funding for K-12 education, healthcare and childcare. Connor disputes those claims as Washington voters prepare to decide whether to repeal the income tax in November.
