WARNED TO TURN BACK… Colorado 4WD Trail so high diesels stop working! Tyres at 2PSI

Imogene Pass at 13,114ft, then an abandoned mining town at 3,500m. Shaun Whale and Graham Cahill run Ouray to Telluride through the San Juan Mountains, snap a hub and split a brake line. Part 2 of the USA trip. After the Rubicon Trail the boys point the rigs east, cover four states and 1,500km of blacktop and roll into Ouray, with local mate Chase leading in a Lexus on 37s. Day one is a climb above the tree line to a dispersed camp at 12,200ft, and the only thing between the convoy and it is a snow drift sitting across an off-camber traverse with nothing below it. Shauno drops the Dirty 30 LandCruiser to 2psi front and 5psi rear, the shovels come out, and a rolled buggy beside the track sets the tone. Day two everything lets go at once. Dylan's Toyota Tacoma snaps the welds off its front diff mount, the Dirty 30 starts missing and smoking with a fuel filter full of sludge, and the Jeep Wrangler JK tears a steel brake line off the chassis on a Saturday afternoon in a tiny mountain town. What follows is a proper bush fix: a run to NAPA for 3/16 line, a flaring tool and fittings, a new section bent by hand, a compression join and a brake test down a hill. Graham Cahill has never worked on a Jeep in his life. Day three is Imogene Pass, the tallest pass in the San Juan Mountains at 13,114ft, a two-way shelf road with a 500m drop off one side, then a few hours north to the Holy Cross City track. It is an up-and-back climb to the ruins of an 1880s mining settlement, and the sign at the trailhead reads moderate to difficult, expect damage and breakages. Rock step, rock garden, a boulder-filled creek, a broken hub, a bent tie rod straightened with a bottle jack and a Tacoma winched up a pinch. Moab is next. Gear that earned its keep: a REDARC lithium setup rated to -20C running an induction cooker at 3,700m, a Mits Alloy tray and canopy, a Dometic fridge, Stedi lights, a Bushwakka awning, a Quad Lock mount, an Ultimate9 throttle controller in the snow and a Runva winch dragging the LandCruiser to flat ground.
