🚆 Vaigai Superfast Express – 49 Glorious Years! | 49th Anniversary Special On 15 August 1977, the legendary Vaigai Express began its inaugural journey from Madurai Junction to Madras Egmore, marking the beginning of one of Southern Railway’s most iconic day trains. On that historic morning, Train No. 135 Down departed Madurai at 6:00 AM, hauled by a YDM-4 diesel locomotive with its distinctive yellow-and-green rake. On its very first run, Vaigai covered the Madurai–Madras Egmore journey in just 7 hours 5 minutes, an extraordinary achievement for the metre-gauge era. Vaigai was more than just a train—it represented speed, innovation and pride on the Southern Railway metre-gauge network. It was known for several firsts, including high-speed metre-gauge operation and early introduction of AC Chair Car facilities. ❤️ 49 years later, the legend continues! For this anniversary special, I captured both UP & DOWN Vaigai Superfast Express services at Tambaram, celebrating a train that has been part of Tamil Nadu's railway story for nearly five decades.
