July is Disability Pride Month. But just why is it that we should be proud? Why make light of my diagnosis, which impacts my life so immensely? Why does stating your support mean anything if you aren't doing anything to help me, or learn about my needs?
Today I'd like to ramble (a lot) about my perspective as a Destiny 2 player, and as someone experiencing life with a congenital heart defect. My disability causes a lot of grief in my life, and there is no exception when playing games. In my opinion, there is far more that developers of our favourite games can and should be doing in order to accommodate for disabled players within their community.
@Bungie posted a Tweet wherein they advertised a piece of merchandise in promotion of Disability Pride. Their intentions are most likely innocent, given that they donate $7 towards a disability employment institute. Nevertheless, I'd like to take this opportunity to delve into my experience with their game as someone suffering various symptoms that roadblock certain aspects of play.
Pride ≠ Awareness.
I hope that this video is able to spark a discussion about what more everyone can do to support those with disabilities. I encourage every one of my viewers to ask questions, and be respectful whilst doing so. I intend only positive things with this rant and conversation. I hope that eventually this video reaches at least one person who can actually make an impact.
I wish I could do more to ensure that players of ALL levels of ability get a fair shot in everything that they embark on - in-game and in real life. True inclusivity and equality is hard to come by. This is something I have always been deeply passionate about, as I have seen too much discrimination, and lack of action in all aspects of my own life. Things must change.
Everybody deserves to escape their struggles when they play games. Gaming is an escape for so many people, but unfortunately some of us must jump through hoops just to make the simplest things work. Some years ago, prior to my personal health taking a fall, I dedicated myself to teaching fresh raids to players with intellectual disabilities or difficulties of any level. It took many hours to get through some runs, but I am immeasurably proud of everyone that completed a raid under my guidance. I don't talk about this fact, as I see no reason to make a fuss, but now seems appropriate to mention. I know many people that would assist if they only had the time. I did, so I helped as many people as I could. I am very satisfied with that. Hopefully one day I can return to doing sherpas like that... For now, I'll help by using my voice.
As stated in this video, please leave a comment below including your thoughts, experiences, and ideas.
Also, a reminder, that not all disabilities are outwardly obvious. There is an enormous range of things that a disability can present as. Everybody has the right to access what they may specifically need in order to not only function in society and in recreational spaces, but thrive and have quality of life and fun in doing so.
Thank you sincerely for your time and attention while I discuss this important topic.
God bless.
