On June 28, 1776, two remarkable events unfolded hundreds of miles apart.
In Philadelphia, Thomas Jefferson and the Committee of Five presented their draft of the Declaration of Independence to the Continental Congress. It wasn't finished. Over the next several days, Congress would debate, revise, and shape it into one of the most important documents in American history.
At almost the same moment, an unfinished Fort Sullivan, built from palmetto logs on the shores of South Carolina, faced a determined attack by the British Navy. Against all expectations, its unusual construction absorbed hours of cannon fire, allowing its defenders to hold their ground and force the British fleet to withdraw.
At first glance, these events seem unrelated.
But they shared something remarkable.
Join me as we explore how two unfinished works helped shape the beginning of the American story... and why sometimes the most important chapters begin long before the ending is in sight.
