Stainless Steel Explained- Austenitic, Martensitic, Ferritic, Duplex & PH Steels
Stainless steel is not a single material,
It is a complete family of alloys, each designed for a specific balance of corrosion resistance, strength, hardness, cost, and manufacturability.
In this video, I explain all major stainless steel categories in a clear and practical way, focusing on why each grade exists and where it should be used in real engineering applications.
▀ ▀ ▀
You will learn:
• Why 304 and 316 are the most commonly used austenitic stainless steels
• Why austenitic steels cannot be hardened, and what limits their strength
• When to choose martensitic stainless steels (410, 420, 440C) for hardness, wear resistance, and sharp edges
• Why ferritic stainless steels (409, 430, 446) are low-cost, magnetic, and excellent at high-temperature oxidation.
• How duplex stainless steels (2205, 2507) combine high strength with excellent corrosion resistance
• Why 254 SMO is used for extreme corrosion environments like seawater and desalination plants
• How precipitation-hardening stainless steels (17-4 PH) achieve high strength through heat treatment

This video is especially useful for: Mechanical design engineers, SPM designers, Manufacturing and production engineers and Materials engineering students
If you design machines, select materials, or want to understand why one stainless steel works and another fails, this video will give you a strong foundation.
