The largest organism on Earth isn't a whale. It isn't a tree. And you could be standing directly on top of it without ever knowing it's there. Hidden beneath an Oregon forest lies the Humongous Fungus — a massive Armillaria network spreading across roughly two thousand three hundred and eighty-five acres. Parts of this extraordinary organism may have been alive for thousands of years. In this episode of Fungosphere, we descend beneath the forest floor to discover the hidden world of mycelium — microscopic fungal threads capable of spreading through soil, invading tree roots and connecting an organism across an enormous landscape. We'll explore how the Humongous Fungus became so large, how scientists discovered that distant infections were actually part of the same organism, how Armillaria attacks and kills trees, and how something almost completely invisible became one of the largest known living organisms on our planet. Above ground, it looks like an ordinary forest. Below ground... something ancient is still growing. 🍄 Subscribe to Fungosphere for weekly journeys into the strange, beautiful and sometimes terrifying world of fungi.
