This video demonstrates the complete step-by-step procedure for assembling and operating a dead-end membrane filtration system under low pressure.
The procedure begins with cleaning the internal components and spacer to remove any impurities or deposits. If necessary, the spacer can be sonicated for effective cleaning. After cleaning, a small amount of water is added to wet the spacer before membrane installation.
The membrane surface is carefully identified, and the membrane is positioned correctly with the polished/smooth surface in the required orientation. Proper centering of the membrane is essential to prevent leakage, membrane damage, or improper filtration.
The lower assembly and sealing components are then positioned, followed by uniform tightening from both sides. Uneven or excessive tightening should be avoided because it may disturb the membrane or sealing arrangement.
After membrane installation, the filtration cell is slightly tilted while adding the feed water along the inner wall of the cell. Water should not be poured forcefully or directly onto the membrane surface, as this can disturb, fold, or damage the membrane.
The top assembly is then installed, and the fittings are hand-tightened uniformly without excessive force. The required knobs/valves and the top end are subsequently closed and secured before applying pressure.
Finally, the filtration cell is connected to the gas cylinder and pressure regulator. The regulator knob is opened slowly and gradually, while continuously monitoring the pressure gauge. Since this experiment involves low-pressure dead-end membrane filtration, the pressure is increased gradually to the required operating condition rather than applying a sudden high pressure.
This demonstration is useful for students and researchers working with membrane filtration, water and wastewater treatment, membrane characterization, permeate flux, solute rejection, and pressure-driven separation processes.
Key steps covered: Cleaning → Spacer preparation → Membrane orientation → Membrane centering → Cell assembly → Uniform tightening → Feed addition → Top assembly → Valve closure → Gradual low-pressure operation.
