My fourteen-year-old granddaughter texted me from behind my own garage: "Grandma, Aunt Lyn is selling your quilts. $5 each." I was sitting on the edge of a rehab bed in Merrillville, Indiana, a little over a week after breaking my hip, learning to stand with a walker.
I'm Olivette Gholston, seventy-seven, thirty-eight years a textile curator at a Chicago museum, riding the South Shore Line from Gary every workday of my life. Fourteen family quilts lived in my cedar chest, some a hundred years old, one my own daughter's crib quilt with seven ducks I stitched in 1973. My daughter Lyn held a power of attorney I signed "for emergencies," a mortgage behind by months, and a plan she never told me about.
I didn't call her. I answered my granddaughter: "Thank you, baby. You haven't told me anything. Delete this and go sell some dishes." Then I found Lyn's sale post online myself, sent my oldest friend to buy back what was left, and let the labels I'd sewn into every quilt in 1996 start ringing my phone.
They did. A stranger in Hobart. A picker who couldn't resell what he'd bought. A house listed "Coming Soon" I never agreed to. By the time my family gathered around that table, thirteen quilts sat folded in front of my daughter, and one question only a label could answer.
If you love something, sew your name and number on it, photograph everything you own, and know who holds your power of attorney, and that you can take it back.
