Why did David Foster Wallace write a boring book—on purpose?
I do an unnecessarily deep dive on The Pale King, Wallace’s unfinished final novel, and its unlikely take on boredom: that it’s not just inevitable, but essential to civic life and just being a good person in general. The Pale King is full of all kinds of disparate weirdo things: IRS cubicles to Jesuit sermons, talking babies, levitating accountants, neoliberal politics, spiritual transcendence, it’s a wild ride. Could this actually be Wallace’s most difficult book? Forget Infinite Jest, The Pale King is where it’s at.
This video breaks down the book's themes of boredom, dread, attention, civic responsibility, and the slow degradation of American politics. We look at critical interpretations, reflect on Wallace’s stylistic choices, and ask what it really means to pay attention in a distracted age.
Check out another video I did in the same style about Jane Eyre!
