ABSTRACT—Although JavaScript is one of the most used programming languages today its design is not well suited for development and maintenance of large applications. To overcome these issues, while at the same time building on the strengths of JavaScript, Microsoft released TypeScript as an open source project in 2012. In this talk we will discuss what TypeScript adds to JavaScript and how it helps web developers on a daily basis based on our experience building production apps in CodeLounge. We will do this by briefly touching on the history of the web and common practices used today for building web apps. To see how it all works in practice we will build the classic pong game as a web app. Since web developers have a tendency to come up with “new” solutions and technologies almost on a monthly basis, it would be interesting to conclude with a discussion on what is actually new and what exists in other programming languages since longer time.
