In the first year of Darius the Mede, the year after Babylon fell, Daniel, now past eighty, read in the prophet Jeremiah that Jerusalem would lie desolate seventy years, and he saw that the seventy years were almost over. He did not sit back and wait. He put on sackcloth and prayed one of the great prayers of the Bible: confessing "we have sinned" though no sin of his is recorded, and asking God to act "not for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies." While he was still praying, the angel Gabriel came at the time of the evening oblation. Episode 5 of our series through the book of Daniel covers chapter 9.
Daniel prayed about seventy years, and Gabriel brought him seventy weeks: seventy sevens of years determined upon Daniel's people and his holy city. We follow the count from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem's wall in Nehemiah's day to Messiah the Prince and the Triumphal Entry; Messiah cut off, and the city and sanctuary destroyed by the Romans in AD 70; the gap of the Church age; and the seventieth week still to come, with the covenant, the abomination of desolation that Jesus spoke of, and the end that God has decreed. We close with four lessons on prayer for Christians who live under pressure for their faith.
Taught from a dispensational, pretribulational viewpoint for a general audience. Scripture is quoted from the King James Version.
