Golden Light Through the Autumn Trees Come along for another relaxing ride through Maryland neighborhoods, peaceful bike paths, wooded trails, quiet backroads, and, of course, another visit to the ever-unpredictable haunted golf course. No racing, no training plans, and no pressure to chase personal records. Just a bicycle, a cool fall afternoon, some relaxing nature sounds, and that warm golden light that seems to show up for less and less time every evening. One of my favorite parts of documenting the same roads and trails throughout the year is seeing just how dramatically they can change depending on the weather, season, and even the time of day. Today made that especially obvious. The temperature was cooler, the sun was sitting lower in the sky, and the entire route had that unmistakable late-afternoon autumn glow. The weather was just about perfect for riding. Cool enough to stay comfortable, but not cold, with that crisp fall air that makes the hills and longer stretches feel noticeably easier than they did during the summer. The heat and humidity that defined so many earlier rides are becoming distant memories now, and I am completely fine with that. As the sun dropped lower, warm light started filtering through the trees, creating long shadows across the trails and backroads. The changing leaves caught the light beautifully, and even the familiar sections of the route had that glowing, almost cinematic look that only seems to happen for a short window this time of year. What used to feel like a comfortable evening ride is slowly turning into a race against daylight. The wooded sections get darker faster, the shadows arrive earlier, and by the end of the route there’s noticeably less light left than there was only a few weeks ago. That’s one of the things I love about keeping the same general route throughout the year. The roads don’t change much, but everything around them does. The light changes. The temperature changes. The trees change. The people disappear earlier. Even the exact same trail can feel completely different depending on whether it’s covered in bright summer sun, storm clouds, or soft autumn light.
