During the defense case, Naresh Bhatt took the stand! Now, let's see the CROSS-EXAMINATION of this defendant.
Case background: In July 2024, 28-year-old nurse and mother Mamta Kafle Bhatt vanished from her home in Manassas Park, Virginia. She was last seen on a video call with her mother on July 29. Her husband, Naresh Bhatt, later told police she had left for Texas or New York and cut off contact. Her body has never been found.
Coworkers asked for a welfare check on August 2 after she missed work. Naresh reported her missing on August 5. He was arrested on August 22, 2024, and a grand jury later indicted him on first-degree murder, concealment of a dead body, and physical defilement of a dead body. Prosecutors allege he killed Mamta in their home on or about July 30, 2024, dismembered her, and disposed of her remains in trash bags left at dumpsters and compactors around Manassas Park and Fairfax County. He has pleaded not guilty.
This is a no-body case. The Commonwealth says blood in the bedroom, closet, shower, and bathtub, Mamta’s DNA on a power saw, heavy water use, cleaning-product purchases, surveillance of bags being dumped, and internet searches about a spouse disappearing or dying will prove she was murdered and that Naresh did it. Prosecutors have also described a marriage already breaking down, including claims that Mamta was preparing to leave. The defense says there is a hole in that evidence the state cannot fill, and that marital problems are not proof of murder.
Jury selection began October 5, 2026, in Prince William County Circuit Court before Judge Kimberly Irving. Opening statements were October 7. Matthew Sweet opened for the Commonwealth. Chief Public Defender Tracey Lenox opened for the defense. The trial is expected to last about seven weeks.
Naresh Bhatt is presumed innocent unless and until a jury finds him guilty.
