When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the Moon, the spacecraft that could take them home was somewhere else — in lunar orbit, with Michael Collins.
That plan was once an outsider's idea. In November 1961, NASA Langley engineer John Houbolt went around his superiors and sent a nine-page letter arguing for lunar orbit rendezvous. This documentary follows the three competing ways to the Moon, why sensible people said no, what the letter actually did, the testing that made the decision work — and what we can, and can't, credit to one letter.
