Step beneath Lahore Fort into the Khilwat Khana Subterranean Chambers — a hidden, four-level complex lying under the Shah Burj forecourt and the Khilwat Khana Quadrangle, built during the reign of Emperor Jahangir and reshaped over centuries of Mughal, Sikh, and British rule. Spanning over 33 interlinked rooms, passages, and staircases, the complex once served for circulation, storage, and confinement — its deep brick foundations also reinforcing the Fort's famous Picture Wall above. Inside, conservators uncovered arched niches and domed ceilings with traces of historic lime plaster, a sealed dome at "Level Zero" accessed by cutting an opening through its crown, a British-era drain hiding an older Mughal terracotta pipe, and a sealed chamber fitted with an iron door — believed to have served as a holding cell — that stayed in place until 2012. Conservation began in April 2023, led by Aga Khan Cultural Service–Pakistan (AKCS-P) with the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA), support from the Government of Punjab, and funding from Agence Française de Développement (AFD). The chambers reopened to the public on 26 September 2025, in the presence of French Ambassador H.E. Nicolas Galey. Filmed in 4K on the DJI Air 3 — no voice-over, just cinematic visuals, atmosphere, and history. ⏱️ 12 Facts: Khilwat Khana Subterranean Chambers 1.
