The artist known as Holiday ended last year with 'Live' A/O: a six part sequence made up of two improvised live sets that masterfully preserved the sounds as they happened. In all their analog wonder, flaws and all. Now, Holiday is back with Spit, Sputter, Something Else, his nine song debut full-length album.
Much like 'Live' A/O, from start to finish on this new album, never does it stray from the intimate sensation of live improvisation. The project is vulnerable and raw in the best of ways. It's full of fuzz, feedback, analog loops. Chatter comes and goes just like it might early in the morning after a late night out with friends. Tuning a guitar alongside bird noises as loved ones brew coffee and brush their teeth.
Listening in to this personal album feels like being in a living room with a focused gearhead, one who does not mind if you light a cigarette and cough while he's recording. It gifts its listener by feeling like we're being invited into a private moment, with each track seemingly being done in one take. By no means does this lessen the impressive outcome; from the moment of pressing record, a great deal of attention is clearly put into chronicling the important moments of this 44 minute project. Every layer, every outside noise, every vocal sound byte.
Holiday, the analog artist moniker of Drew Collins, best known for his work under the name sundots, seems to house Holiday as a place for experimentation. Less pressure and more possibilities. Found sounds and documented happenstance. Including GPS directions and muffled conversations. Walking from one room to another. Opening the door for a friend. Radio frequencies and news broadcasts. Flipping stations and channels as tender guitars come and go. "with adam, austin", a track halfway into the album, sounds like it might be inside of a laundromat or on top of the hood of an old car. Crickets and delicate guitars make appearances while faraway piano keys soundtrack an unknown space.
Much like the recorded live sets from 2025, this album feels like a time capsule. And perhaps that's the ongoing aesthetic and mission statement and purpose of the Holiday moniker: to capture the noises of the world as they arrive. An auditory journal. A diary of sound. Regardless of how this music was made, whether it was entirely in one take or meticulously tinkered with over many months, this music transcends time and space. Pressing play and it could be 2026. It could be 1981. It could be 2060. It doesn't matter. Pressing play on Spit, Sputter, Something Else will bring you to here. Right now.
