GH1 throwback time - this song was a pretty good choice to bring back for RB3.
Despite being super easy to FC and only having 2 acts, this song has one of the hardest squeezes I've ever hit: the act leading into chorus 1 is an insane gnarly double squeeze with a twist - you also need to whammy on the last note in order to extend OD enough to hit all those ticks as well as a sustain-end squeeze right at the end of it.
As far as I can tell there's only 1 frame of lenience to hit the double and under normal circumstances with a squeeze that tight it could be shared between both ends, but since you need to whammy at the end that "extra frame" can't be at the beginning. So the front end needs to be done on the absolute last frame of the timing window to ensure that the single leftover frame of OD goes towards the whammying on the back end and is no longer really lenience.
All of that is made even worse by the fact that you can not buffer whammy at all, going even the tiniest little bit before the note registers causes the game to reject the whammy input entirely so the whole squeeze effectively becomes even harder than 2x frame perfect.
The back end squeezing to the last 2-note chord after sustain is kind of different since the early whammy isn't really dependent on calibration settings, it just matters how early into the timing window the whammy starts. The 2nd back end of the act does get a little easier on lower delay to a certain point though since it pushes the sustain end back and creates a shorter gap between the end of the whammy and the start of the timing window for the note itself, but that also makes it easier to accidentally drop sustains as well as not hitting all the ticks on the final act due to the last sustain of the song also being pushed back. So you also need to go pretty late into the timing window for the front end of the second act on these settings to get every tick under OD.
I was only able to hit the first act about once every 15 to 20 minutes, it's incredibly difficult in case all that description above didn't make it clear lol. Had to do it 4 times since the first 3 had other fails; I had 2 runs with a score of 79516 (one lost 2 points to the last act not being late enough and OD stopping a single tick early on the final sustain, the other to a dropped sustain on the last red grace note), as well as a painful HOPO failure in the solo on the first time I hit the squeeze.
I watched the video of that one back - from what I saw I fretted correctly and within the normal timing window so there should have been absolutely no reason for it to miss. Was super frustrating at the time but it's kind of just a funny moment now that I was able to reclaim the run.
Between that dumb miss and the naturally awkward non-HOPO placements I ended up playing most of the solo in true GH1 fashion for every run afterwards by just strumming everything lol
This optimal score beat a 13-way tie for 1st place on SH by 132 points.
As far as I know this is the first and only score of this song which is true optimal.
The strategy for 79386 is super easy, just set video calibration to around +50 or higher and both acts are completely free. I was able to get that score on my first try:
