The Haunted Mansion took 18 years to go from a 1951 sketch to opening day at Disneyland. Not because Disney had no ideas. Because it had too many. Claude Coats wanted dread: dark hallways, mood, unease. Marc Davis wanted gags: comic ghosts and a playful spirit world. Yale Gracey and Rolly Crump kept inventing illusions. Meanwhile the house stood finished in New Orleans Square with nothing inside but an argument. Then the railroad berm forced an elevator, the Omnimover took control of every angle, and the fight itself became the ride's structure. So was it meant to be scary or funny?
