The original Plas Newydd goes back to the 1470's and was home to the Griffith and Bayly family. It was greatly altered in the 18th Century by architect James Wyatt, and a large stable block was added.
The estate was acquired by Henry William Paget in 1812. For his part leading a charge at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, in which he lost a leg, he was created 1st Marquess of Anglesey. It is said that Paget remarked to the Iron Duke, 'by God Sir, I've lost my leg!' to which Wellington replied 'by God sir, so you have'. A fully articulated wooden leg was made for him on his return, the first in the world, and it is still on display. The house remained in the Paget family until 1976, when it was taken over by The National Trust, although the 7th Marquess kept rooms there until his death in 2013.
The house contains the largest canvas painting in the UK at 58feet long, and painted in 1936-38 by Rex Whistler. The painting, called 'Capriccio' is Italianate in style but contains the Menai Strait and the mountains of Snowdonia.
