New Voices of Dunhuang《敦煌新語》 Composer 作曲: Jiang Ying 姜瑩 Performed by: FoMO ----- Dunhuang! This ancient city in Western China has long served a gateway to the West. For hundreds of years, caravans would bring both material goods and cultural influences to and from India, Persia, and Greece, among other places. Reflecting this fusion of cultures, the New Voices of Dunhuang《敦煌新語》blends Western Asian sounds with an East Asian form. Like many Chinese instrumental compositions, Dunhuang proceeds in three defined sections. The first is unmeasured and improvisatory, arising like a mirage from the distance; its three phrases feature the dizi, erhu, and pipa in that order. The second is the “slow” section, characterized by a steady beat that perhaps depicts the plodding of camels as they traverse the Silk Road. It gives way to the final “fast” section, a whirling dance that grows in intensity as peoples from around the world gather in the ancient city to celebrate their heritage. Blending traditional Chinese musical idioms with contemporary orchestral writing, the work evokes images of flying apsaras, magnificent murals, camel caravans, and the cultural exchanges that flourished along the Silk Road, presenting Dunhuang as both an enduring historical treasure and a living source of artistic inspiration.
