What does it actually take to get through a winter night in a car? Outreach workers say the people who last the longest don't own more gear than anyone else. They own the right fifteen things, and they know why each one is there. This video walks through all fifteen, in the order they tend to matter.
⚠️ Important: The people in these stories are composites drawn from outreach accounts, and everything here is general information, not medical or legal advice. Nothing replaces a heated room. When the forecast drops past what a setup can handle, go to a shelter or warming center.
In this video:
1. Sleeping bag rated well below the forecast
2. Closed-cell foam pad
3. Reflective window covers
4. Battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm
5. Hard plastic water bottle and thermos
6. Wool socks and dry spare clothes
7. Hat, face covering, and mittens
8. Chemical hand and foot warmers
9. Folding shovel and traction aids
10. Portable jump starter
11. High-calorie food and water that doesn't freeze
12. First aid kit and a week of medication
13. Headlamp and power bank
14. A folder with a plan
15. Night bathroom kit
Safety rules to remember:
Never run the engine while sleeping
Never use a stove, grill, or open flame inside the vehicle
Crack two windows about a half inch for air
Keep the tailpipe clear of snow
Park out of the wind, away from where a plow will bury you
Tell a friend where you are
On a tight budget? If you can only afford three items, choose the sleeping bag, the foam pad, and the carbon monoxide alarm. Outreach groups, libraries, and community centers often give out winter gear for free.
Need help right now? If it's dangerously cold, go to a shelter or warming center. In the US, you can dial 211 to find local services.
