A woman's voice sings above them in a language that does not exist. Made to be left on through a long stretch of work, study or reading. 📖 Story The lamp was cold when she reached the top of the stair. She hung her coat on the rail, put both hands flat on the brass, and pushed. It moved the way it always moves — slowly at first, then on its own — and the beam went out across the water and found nothing. Nothing is what it usually finds. No ship has passed this way in years. She turns the light anyway. Between turns she sits on the gallery rail with her legs over the drop, salt on her face, the whole black sea below her not making a sound. The beam comes round, lights the far rocks for a moment, and goes on. Once she wiped the glass with her sleeve and stood with her cheek against it, watching the light run out and out and not come back. No one is coming tonight. She knows that.
