*Lesson 98. The Contents of Holy Scripture: Mark — The Gospel of the Suffering Servant* *1. Introduction.* Mark, traditionally the interpreter of Peter, appears especially suited to Gentile Christians at Rome. He presents Christ amid a world of power, action, service, and suffering. *2. The Suffering Servant.* Mark 10:45 — Christ came “not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Mark shows Him continually labouring, serving, suffering, and finally giving Himself for His people. *3. Christ the Prophet.* Mark begins with prophecy and proceeds immediately to preaching: John preaches, Christ preaches, and the disciples are sent preaching. Mark 1:38; 9:7. *4. The Ox.* Strength under the yoke: patient labour, burden-bearing, service, and sacrifice. *5. Suffering unto Glory.* Christ “must suffer” (8:31). The disciples seek greatness; Christ teaches the cross. His suffering fulfils God's decree, Scripture, and redemption. *6. The Roman Gospel of Action and Power.* Mark moves “straightway.” Yet the Servant possesses authority over devils, disease, sin, nature, death, and creation. *7. The Mystery Revealed.* Christ's identity cannot be understood apart from His cross: “Thou art the Christ” → suffering → cross → resurrection → “Truly this man was the Son of God.” *8. The Gospel of the Psalms.* Suffering → prayer → forsakenness → trust → vindication → kingdom. *9. The Gospel of Discipleship.* *10. The Gospel of the Son of God.*
