Bob Barker was paid ten million dollars a year, built a fortune above seventy million, and set out to die with nothing at all, and that is exactly how the story of The Price Is Right then and now 2026 ends. This is the whole life of the man who walked out on September 4, 1972, took the microphone from model Anitra Ford while Janice Pennington showed off the very first item up for bids, a fur coat, and then spent thirty-five years quietly undoing that moment.
We follow Barker from a timber town in Washington to the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota, from the father he lost at six to the Ella Fitzgerald concert in Springfield, Missouri where a fifteen year old boy met Dorothy Jo Gideon and never looked at anyone else. They married in 1945 and stayed married for thirty-six years, until lung cancer took her in October 1981 at fifty-seven, and he faced twenty-six more seasons of the number one show in daytime completely alone, with no second wife and no children to inherit any of it.
The shocking changes came after he retired on June 6, 2007 and handed the show to Drew Carey. Barker gave more than thirty million dollars to animals, walked away from twenty-one years of hosting national pageants rather than stand beside a fur coat, spent his last years with Nancy Burnet, and carried a diagnosis he never once discussed in public until he died at home in the Hollywood Hills on August 26, 2023, fifteen weeks short of a hundred. Where he lies now, and what was left of the money, is the part almost nobody knows.
