Chinese Listening Practice | HSK 2-3 | Slow Chinese Podcast
Have you ever started learning Chinese with lots of motivation… but stopped after just a few days?
In today's Slow Chinese Podcast, Leo shows Lin his Chinese study tracker.
There are only THREE checkmarks.
He practiced Chinese for three days.
Then he stopped.
And for THREE MONTHS, he felt too embarrassed to start again!
好习惯,怎么才能坚持下去?
How can we make good habits last?
In EP22, Lin and Leo explore why building good habits can be difficult, how to make Chinese practice easier, and why missing a day doesn't mean you've failed.
1. Start Small and Make a Clear Plan
Leo originally wanted to study Chinese for two hours every day.
On the first day, he studied for two hours.
On the second day, one hour.
On the third day, just fifteen minutes.
He felt like he'd failed.
Lin suggests starting with something much smaller.
每天晚饭以后,在书桌前说三句中文。
Every day after dinner, say three Chinese sentences at your desk.
A useful plan answers three questions:
When will you practice?
Where will you practice?
What will you do?
And on a particularly busy day, even one sentence can be a starting point.
2. Make Starting Easier
Sometimes your Chinese textbook is hidden in a drawer.
Your phone is beside you.
And before you've even opened the book, you're watching videos.
Lin suggests preparing your study space in advance.
Put your textbook where you can see it.
Open it to the page you want to practice.
Keep your pen ready.
If you're studying from a book, put your phone somewhere less distracting.
Small changes can make beginning much easier.
3. Missed a Day? You Can Start Again
Leo thinks that if he misses one day, his entire plan is ruined.
But Lin reminds him:
中间停了,也可以再开始。
Even if you stop for a while, you can start again.
You don't need to make up every missed day.
You don't need a brand-new notebook.
And you don't have to wait until next Monday.
You can return to something simple that you already know.
我今天又开始学中文了。
I started learning Chinese again today.
Keep Your Practice Interesting
Lin and Leo also talk about choosing topics you enjoy, noticing your progress, and giving yourself time to rest.
If you enjoy food, practice ordering noodles.
If you like listening, choose a short Chinese conversation.
If you feel bored, you can change the content without abandoning your entire routine.
Remember: consistency doesn't mean doing exactly the same amount every single day.
