Located in the county of Cornwall, and around 20 miles east, and slightly north, of Truro is the town of Fowey (pronounced 'FOY'). Geographically, Fowey is situated on the west bank of the estuary of the namesake River Fowey, around the point where it meets the English Channel. Its name is derived from Cornish 'Fowydh', meaning 'beech trees'. At the heart of the town is the Parish Church of St Fimbarrus or St Nicholas (that's its official name, not me being indecisive). This dates from the 14th century, with 15th century additions and some 19th century restoration. The church is Grade I listed. Fowey's history as a market town dates back to circa 1300 or possibly earlier, when a charter was granted. As the river silted at Lostwithiel, Fowey rose to become one of Cornwall’s leading ports, handling tin and other goods. It became a producer of ships, supplying vessels that were used in the Siege of Calais during the Hundred Years' War, and going on to hit a peak during the 19th century, before declining in the 20th century. In 1874 a railway station opened in Fowey courtesy of the Lostwithiel and Fowey Railway. This was the southern terminus of a branch line linking the town to the main line via Lostwithiel. The station closed to passengers in 1965, and to freight in 1968. Today, public transport to Fowey consists of direct buses from St Austell, St Blazey and various other nearby locations, as well as ferry services from Polruan and Bodinnick across the estuary, and a seasonal service from Mevagissey. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
