On May 27, 1997, a thin rope tornado touched down north of Jarrell, Texas. Within minutes it grew into a violent F5, three-quarters of a mile wide, with winds later estimated at more than 260 mph. Then it slowed almost to a stop, right on top of a small subdivision called Double Creek Estates.
Storm photographers caught it splitting into whirlwinds that looked like two legs striding across the fields. People called it the “Dead Man Walking.” By the time it moved on, it had peeled the asphalt off the roads and wiped homes down to their foundations. Twenty-seven people died.
This 3D animated documentary tells the full story of the Jarrell tornado: the forecast that called the tornado risk low, the warning that came with only minutes to spare, the families who did everything right, and why it is still the last F5 tornado ever recorded in Texas.
