PARAPET WALL: COLUMN FIRST OR BRICKWORK FIRST? 🧱🏗️ A common site question is: Should the RCC column be cast first and then brickwork, or should brickwork be completed first and the column cast afterward?😂 For a parapet provided with RCC tie/stiffener columns, the construction sequence should follow the structural drawings and designed connection detail. Where the confined-masonry approach of IS 4326 is applicable, the masonry is constructed first and the tie-column concrete is subsequently cast against the masonry, using proper toothed/connected interfaces or dowels to develop adequate bond. (Law Resource) The key is not simply “column first” or “brickwork first.” The real objective is: ✅ Proper connection between masonry and RCC ✅ Adequate lateral stability of the parapet ✅ Proper anchorage of vertical reinforcement ✅ RCC tie/stiffener column extending into the parapet ✅ Top tie beam/coping where required ✅ Construction strictly as per the structural design Important: Do not blindly copy a sequence from another building.
