Golper Baksho | Episode 09 | Azizul Islam Bacchu | Mohsin Ul Hakim
Azizul Islam Bacchu is a resident of Char Raulia village in Kurigram district, northern Bangladesh. He has lost his farmland, home, and homestead several times due to floods and river erosion. Yet, he has never given up. Time and again, he has overcome adversity and rebuilt his life.
Kurigram is one of the most flood-prone districts in northern Bangladesh. Criss-crossed by numerous rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar, the district is home to more than 450 river islands, locally known as chars. Every year, floods and river erosion force many people to lose their homes, farmland and livelihoods. In some cases, entire river islands disappear, taking away people's homes and the land they have lived on for generations.
However, taking the right precautions and planning ahead can help reduce the damage caused by natural disasters. Drawing on his own experiences, Azizul Islam Bacchu has taken practical steps to protect his home from future floods. He has rebuilt his house and raised his homestead to make it higher and more resilient against floodwaters.
How has Azizul Islam Bacchu managed to rise again and again in the face of floods and river erosion? What lessons has he learnt from his experiences in preparing for and coping with disasters? In the ninth episode of Golper Baksho, we hear his inspiring story of resilience, rebuilding, and preparing for the challenges of natural disasters.
