As we continue through the Sermon on the Mount, Ben’s message brought a timely and important warning from Jesus that deserves our continued reflection throughout the week.
The sermon explored Jesus' warning in Matthew 7:15-20, where He calls His followers to beware of false teachers who appear safe on the outside but are inwardly dangerous.
Drawing on the contrast between true and false teachers found throughout Scripture, the message challenged us to sharpen our discernment, recognize false teaching by its fruit, and consider how we might lovingly help those in our lives who are slowly drifting from their faith under the influence of wrong doctrine.
Takeaways:
False teachers are dangerous precisely because they appear safe. They may be polished, confident, and even popular, and they often exploit genuine struggles people have with Scripture by offering distorted or man-centered answers. Jesus promises, however, that we can recognize them by their fruit, including their doctrine, their focus, and their character.
Grounding ourselves in biblical doctrine and cultivating a high view of God are our strongest defenses. When we are deeply rooted in Scripture and captivated by the glory of Christ, man-centered and prosperity-driven teachings lose their appeal. A genuine love for Jesus and a life bearing good fruit make the empty promises of false teaching far easier to identify and resist.
Helping a drifting friend or family member requires prayer, patience, and insight. Rather than confronting false teaching head-on in a way that may cause defensiveness, seek to understand what need in that person's heart the false teaching is speaking to, and then lovingly show them how the true gospel of Jesus Christ meets that need far more fully and faithfully.
