From the archives: an old recording of music by Vieux Gaultier.

“Tombeau de Mézangeau” was written in memory of René Mésangeau, one of the important French lutenists and composers of the early 17th century. Mésangeau was closely connected with the French court and became an influential figure in the development of French lute music. This piece reflects the intimate, refined, and deeply expressive character of the French lute tradition. The recording quality is quite simple, as it was made with a very basic microphone, but I still wanted to share this old archival performance.
