In the late 70s, Jerry Falwell founded the “Moral Majority” in response to perceived “threats to America’s morality”—things like the civil rights movement, women’s rights, gay rights, abortion, and teaching evolution. As a young adult, Venerable Thubten Chonyi rejected this kind of right/wrong “morality,” throwing out ethics altogether until she discovered the Buddhist ethical framework.
